Visitors (non-TUMSAT members)
The libraries of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology are open to the public.
The Main Library in the Shinagawa Campus mainly stores materials related to marine life, fisheries science, fishing and food.
The Branch Library in the Etchujima Campus mainly stores materials related to ships, logistics and the traffic field.
For reading
Please register at the entrance. You do not need to present documents, such as a letter of reference and your ID card, to read/photocopy material within the library. For statistical purposes, however, we would like to ask you to register every time you visit the library.

If you need specific material, please check beforehand whether it is stored by the library by using the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) and then fill in and send this form to the library.
The materials owned by the faculty members (for the courses) are not available, in principle.
Copy service
Materials stored by the libraries can be photocopied only partially per copy per person in compliance with the Copyright Act of Japan.
  • Please fill in an application form for the photocopying of materials. Use the machine in compliance with the photocopying rules.
  • The price is 10 yen per sheet for black and white copying and 50 yen per sheet for color copying.
  • Please pay with 10 yen coins, as we may run out of change.
  • You cannot exchange money within the library.
  • No receipts shall be issued.

  1. After receiving your application form, the library will contact you with the fee and payment method, so please pay to the designated bank account.
  2. After confirming your payment, we will mail you the copies.

Loans
If you want to borrow a book from the TUMSAT libraries, you need to make a user registration by presenting an ID document issued by a public organization and on which your current address is indicated (driver's license, health insurance card, etc.).
If you present an ID document on which your current address is not indicated, you need to present another document that shows the address, such as a certificate of residence and a postal mail delivered to your current address within one month before the registration date.

【Opening hours for user registration】
Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In principle, we will issue a library card to you on the same day. You can use this card at both the Shinagawa and Etchujima Campus libraries. The card shall be valid until the end of the academic year (March 31) in which you made a user registration at the library. In order to update the card, you need to present an ID document on which your current address is indicated again to the counter.


【Materials that can be borrowed】Books stored by the Libraries
  *You cannot borrow magazines, reference books, audiovisual materials, materials for the courses and valuable materials.
【Number of books that can be borrowed at one time】10
【Borrowing period】2 weeks
  *You can extend the period only once by two weeks for books for which the borrowing period has not yet expired.
Returning books
Please return the borrowed books to the library counter.

When the library is closed, please return the books by putting them into the book drop. However, books with DVDs and CDs should be returned directly to the counter to prevent them from being damaged.
You can return books to the following address also by Yu-Mail (registered mail) or by other courier service before the expiration of the borrowing period. Please package them appropriately to prevent any damage to the books.

Reservation
You can reserve/order a book online. Immediately after the book you have reserved/ordered becomes available, you will receive an e-mail.
  • You can make a reservation for a book that is on loan.
  • You can borrow a book that is not stored by the library by ordering it online.
Walk-in Users

Visitors can not use electronic resources.
This is not possible due to the lack of an environment for such access.

Caution
It is prohibited to lend your library card or the materials borrowed by you to others. If the material has not been returned to the library as a result of these acts, you will be held liable for it.

You must return the books before the borrowing period expires. If you do not return any of the books by the deadline, you will be unable to borrow any more books until the end (March 31) of the academic year.

In the event that you lose or damage any of the materials you have borrowed, you will be asked to make a compensation in kind. For details, please contact the library staff.
Other rules
Please also obey the following rules in the library.
  • There are no lockers available in the library, and you need to be mindful of your own valuables.
  • Smoking is prohibited.
  • Eating and drinking are also prohibited. However, you can drink beverages contained in plastic bottles, drink bottles and other containers that can be sealed, but you need to keep them in your bag except while drinking.
  • Please refrain from talking on your mobile phone.
